My Family Food Traditions(: Samantha

well in my family we have a lot of food traditions especially on the holidays. my grandma is always the one cooking along with my mother and my aunt sometimes helps. during holidays or winter times we always make tamales of pork or chile verde, mole, posole, chicharones, and ponche. ponche is a drink where you use tamarindo, apples, cinamon, tejocotes, a little bit of orange, cana, guayaba, and sugar.

My Family Food Memory :D Frenesis (Fifis)

Ummm we have a lot of food memories but im only going to name a few. For Christmas we all get together at my house and make menudo or sopapillas. All the women are in the kitchen making the food and the men are outside cleaning in the garage for the party. For New Years we make tamales some with pork, green chile and cheese and some that have pecans, raisins, coconuts and other things. On New Years the men are outside making chicharrones but we are always aware before the chicharrones are made because we get temblorosos with salt and limon on a corn tortilla yummm :) p.s. chicharrones is the skin from the pigs and temlorosos is the stage before the skin starts to get hard.

Ruth and Grandpa Zekiel's Meatloaf :D

I have alotta memories when it comes to cooking with the family. The one I remember the most is when me and my grandpa made his secret recipe for the best meatloaf with incredible, finger- licking marinara sauce XD I cant tell you the exact recipe, but it was an awesome moment to find out what my grandpa does to make the best meatloaf. One hint, a lotta eggs!! He rarely shares any of his recipes, whether its for savory foods or desserts. It made me feel like he supported my interest in culinary when he shared the famous meatloaf recipe (:

Susie - Tooties! (Favorite Food Memory)

My favorite food memory is when we all get together to make Tamales on Christmas Eve. I love helping my mom mix the masa, then help my aunt and grandpa smear the masa on the leafs, and finally put the meats in the middle and wrap them up to cook. We usually take like half of a day doing them since we make like around 500 tamales. What I also like about doing them is that I get to spend some time with my family and more since it is Christmas Eve.

I've discovered through cooking that i dont like recipies. I just like to have ingredients and just to go from there. From sophmore year to now, i do know that i do not want to persue a career in culinary but would like to have a huge family to have huge dinnes, so that i can cook for them.

I have many family traditions. One of my family traditions is that on Thanksgiving we eat Turkey, Tamales, Pozole, Ribs, and Jamon al Horno. These foods are very traditional. Also, on Christmas, al my family and I like to make a dessert called Bunuelos! these are very delicious and sweet!! It is the perfect dessert to eat on Christmas. We also eat Tamales, Carnitas, and Barbacoa! On New Years we like to celebrate the new year with a drink called Ponche. It is a drink with different fruits in it and you can drink it cold or hot, however you like it!! It is very yummy and very traditional. All these foods and drinks are a tradition that my family and I like to do!! :) :D

Norma A. (Senior Sous Chef)

Throughout the years of culinary in Skyline I have learned many things. Originally I was pursuing a career in culinary, but I have learned that I really want to be a pastry chef. Through cooking iv learned that I have patience and creativity. Me having patience was the last thing I would think that I would have but iv learned throughout the cooking and baking experience that its essential. I only have patience for my passion or something that I really care for. A discovery I made last year when working with Noehly (senior sous chef) is that when were both mad we usually do an amazing  job and dish out awesome dishes or baked goods. Another discovery of mine is that I will never ever!!! send out anything that im not satisfied with.I learned that my call is in the culinary industry but mainly the pastry side. Culinary is a never ending learning place and its just beginning. As we step in the industry we will discover and learn many things. :D

Barbara Stovall SENIOR

Culinary is very influential. Learning how to cook helps make living life a little bit easier. For me, cooking has made me realize the ups and downs life has to offer. When I am trying out a new recipe and it fails, I just retry the recipe in a different way. This has made me realize that in life when something doesn't work out the way I want to I just have to try again and work out the kinks.
Through cooking I have discovered a lot about my personality and how my attitudes affect the outcome of my food. When I'm happy my dishes are colorful, creative, and taste amazing. When I'm not my dishes are bland, pale, and mediocre. However, overall culinary has taught me not to worry about things I can't change...

Barbara Stovall SENIOR

Well I grew up basically raising my sister and brother. I would help with homework. I would make sure they had baths and were in bed on time. I made sure they had clean clothes. I would do all I could for them (short of providing their shelter), not because my parents weren't there, but because they were usually not up for taking care of them. Because I had to grow up quickly, I had to learn how to survive quickly. I had to teach my sister and brother how to go out and get what they needed on their own, because no one else was going to do it for them. Yet, I was always in the background, just in case they fell.....
They are the reason I cook. They influence my passion for cooking. They drive me to succeed and do my best so I can make things better for them. Without them their would be no need to have a family dinner on Sunday. Their would be no need to be covered head to toe in flour trying to make the "biggest" cookie in the world. Their would be no need to show them the joy of being able to turn nothing into something, to show them that from nothing they can be something. Without my sister and brother I would have never dabbled in cooking. I would have never gotten to experience the sheer joy of taking random ingredients, creating something amazing, delicious, and memorable to make my sister and brother happy. Culinary arts is my life and I thank my sister and brother for giving me the opportunity to realize it.

aARON - Favorite Family Food Memory

My favorite family food memory would have to be the time my grandmother and I made a rotiseree chicken rubbed in some simple spices. It was hot summer night and my grandmother really didnt feel like cooking a full meal, so we just put a whole chicken in the rotiseree. Once it was finished, we simply left the bird on the spit and carved the pieces we wanted. Like CAVEMEN!!!!

Oscar Gonzalez : Food Memory

Whether it's a party or a regular cook out, my father has always kept me by his side to cook bbq chicken, sausages, fajitas, pig skins, and carnitas. Today, he asks me to cook the food ever since I had applied to culinary arts. I suppose you can say it's a father-son thing, and in my eyes, it's the greatest food memory.

DreNae Davison's Favorite Food Memory

my family and i have so many food memories and traditions.  one of my favorites would have to be probably the funniest. so, each family has thier own sunday to cook and feed everyone in the family. so on first sundays its my granny's turn, second sundays are me and my mom,on third sundays it my aunt, and third sunday is usually ordered out food. However, on fifth sundays it the men in the family turn, which is my grandpa, cousin, and my brother. So one fifth sunday all the women and girls left to go visit my great grandma, and left the men and boys to finish dinner. when we arrived back, the kitchen was a TOTAL DISASTER! However, when we got to the dining room table, all that was thier was barbecue beans and cornbread. It was the funniest and probably one of my most favoritable sundays of all time! So now on fifth sundays we all just contribute to a fiest!

Carina V. "Food Memories"

One of my favorite food memories with my family is probably from times around Christmas and New Years. It may be the only time around the year my mom makes a lot of tamales. She makes them very handmade and very old style so, that's why I love them because they ae so delicious. I know many people do them way different but, I really don't care 'cause I mostly love my mothers cooking. I love how the taste and favoritism of food brings our family together to have wonderful times. (:

Sunday Mornings ♥

Growing up Sunday breakfast has always been a tradition of my family's. Since the Sunday after I left the hospital to the Sunday a couple of days ago, the tradition has been followed even though every once and a while one or two families cant make it. Every Sunday morning around 11 my grandmother and grandfather and there four kids and there families all get together at my grandparents' house for menudo which is a Mexican sound made with hominy and pork. Its the one time of the week where we're all together, talking about how our week went, laughing at each other, smiling, enjoying each others company and even reminiscing about the old days when they were young and when my cousins and i were younger. The best part was eating that soup. that soup is by far the BEST menudo i have ever tasted and I'm not just saying that because my grandparents bought me my first car. :D

: ) Traditions in My Family (Marshell)

Hello AGAIN. Today I am to blog about my family's traditions. We have two traditions in my family.

One: Cook/Bake all the food the night before Thanksgiving. & The day of Thanksgiving we all gather in a circle, pray, then EAT :D.  <-- That's the best part.

Two: We all open one present the day before Christmas.

Chicken Little

Well for me culinary arts has helped me discover a lot about myself. I have made some hard choices in life but one thing that is always going to be a life changer is being here in this cluster doing what I love with the people I have become family with. Since cooking I have gained some control of my anger lol but I still loose it sometimes. I use to quite a lot of things in my life and now with the determination I have gained i want everything to be the best. I can be calm and nothing matters when I cook and what can i say but i love it

Samuel (*The Great Isaiah*) Crayton

To be honest i really haven't discovered anything about myself through cooking. I realized that it wasn't for me my sophmore year. I enjoy cooking sometimes but it just doesn't fit me that is why i feel that i cannot discover anything about myself through cooking. But if there one thing i discovered through cooking is that i like doing it with my peers. It makes cooking worth my time when we are in the kitchen working togther we seem like a family.

Carol ==.==

Through the years, being in culinary arts has taught me valuable life lessons that I take with me into the big world.  I have learned that I can be extremely patient (when needed), a skill that I did not used to be good at. I also learned that in order to succeed one must sometimes ask for help from other. Also when things don't work your way like a recipe (or anything in life), its better to go with it rather than trying to contradict the situation (I don't like confrontation ).

Cynthia Ochoa

Learning how to cook has made me discover many traits about me that I didn't know I possessed. When I cook or that is, bake, I become a patient person because I take the time to make everything how it's suppose to be and I want it to come out the best that it can be. I'm more open to possibilities and new ideas, which I didn't do before. Now I realize that you can make anything out of nothing. Because of this, I'm really excited to see what Culinary Arts has to offer to me once I study more in college. I can't wait for the unique experiences I'll encounter and all the people I will meet along the way. This is something that I can say I'm definitely planning on pursuing in my life, no matter what obstacles I may have to go through, in the end I'll know I tried my best.

Noehly Maldonado -Senior Sous Chef

Good evening, fellow bloggers! I'd like you all to know that through food I've discovered my patience and passion. Never did I think I'd have so much patience for cakes or cookies or anything actually. I've also never been so passionate about food. I can't imagine myself not cooking or living without a kitchen.

D'Andre (*SupaStar*) Moorefield

SupaStar here once again, in the flesh! Leading scorer of the Skyline Varsity Basketball Team! But anyways, I have learned many things about myself through cooking. I've learned what type of Chef I am, what methods of cooking I like to use, what foods are my specialty, etc. I've also learned that I dont want to have a profession in this field. I've learned, through Culinary Arts, that I can do anything I set my mind to. Culinary has taught me MANY THINGS!!!

Diana (Alex) Rangel

When i was a freshman in Culinary Arts I never thought I would like it as much as I do. The teachers here have taught me the basic steps of cooking like knife skills, baking methods, and sanitaion. I've made great friends here and we keep bonding as the years goes on. Now as a senior, I feel very intersested in pursuing a career in culinary. I always bake and cook at home and I enjoy it very much. I expect to learn more as the year progresses and also to gain more experience.

I am a senior at Skyline High School. I'm currently apart of the Skyline Varsity Basketball team. I start at forward, and I am currently a leading scorer at 18 points a game. I am in Senate which is like Student Council. I do alot of work around the school and in the community. I am in Culinary because I'm really good at cooking. I don't have a passion for it, but I enjoy it. Cooking is a way for me to express myself, and have a fun time doing it.

Mayra Aparicio(: Senior

Hi my name is Mayra. I am a senior at Skyline and I'm in the culinary arts cluster. I am Salvadorian-Mexican so I am acquainted with the Salvadorian and Mexican traditional foods. Learning about different heritages in the world and their different traditional foods is what drives my passion in culinary arts.(:

Abril:) Senior Sous Chef!!

My name is Abril Garcia, but i prefer to be called April. I'm part of the best cluster at Skyline High School, Culinary Arts! Been in here since my freshman year and loved every minute of it. I love to cook, its my passion and the chefs have helped me pursue my passion.I want to go on to El Centro still pursuing culinary at their culinary school and hopefully move on to The Culinary Institutes of America in New York.Working hard and getting PAID for doing what i love is my goal. Chef Barney helped me alot with my skills and all the responsibilities that come with being a chef, and now we have Chef Rodriguez who will do anything to get us to where we need to be and i believe i need to be in a kitchen. :) I can't forget Chef Felton, thankful he was there to push us even though sometimes we thought it was annoying, but hey it helped i believe i grew stronger emotionally in the kitchen, no pain no game right? haha
What i love about this cluster is that we are not only classmates, we are family and together anything is possible although its sorta a dysfunctional family as we call it.

Well what drives my passion for cooking, is the freedom to be whoever you are. There's a creativity side to it, an art that is spectacular. I see these famous chef who do what they love and make people happy along the way. I want to do that with my food. I hope to have my own restaurant one day, andbe my own boss.

Cynthia Ochoa

Hello there, nice to meet you. My name is Cynthia Ochoa (second from left end) and I'm involved in the awesome Culinary Arts program at Skyline High school along with all my other great cooking buddies! I'm really content to be part of this because when I'm cooking or baking, I forget about everything else, it's as if that's the thing that makes me feel at my best. During these 4 years, I've realized that being a chef is something I can see my self being when I'm older. When I first started high school, I wasn't really sure about what I wanted to do because there were so many subjects that interested me, but being in this class for this long has showed me that cooking is much more fun than I thought it would be! There are so many ways that can help me become part of the Cooking Industry and I can't wait to figure them out. One of the most interesting subjects of cooking to me is baking. Baking is inspiring to me because there are so many designs and flavors that can be put into a final dish. I can't wait to have my own restaurant one day and when I do, I'll happily say that these 4 years and college really paid off! I plan on getting an Associate's Degree at El Centro College, then study business and management so I can open my own french restaurant one day! I'm really excited about what Chef Rodriguez has planned for us this year! I know it's going to be an amazing year with all my great Culinary Arts classmates. Thanks for always being there for me!<3

Norma A. (Senior Sous Chef)

Hello there reader, my name is Norma Aguilar. I am seventeen years old attending Skyline High School for the CULINARY ARTS program. Im one of the four sous chefs of the senior class. A quiet person I am but, not a socially akward person so I think . A friendly, caring, and shy human I am. I have a twin.. Do we look alike? well no not really but ill let you decide when you have the time to see us.Culinary Arts classroom is my sanctuary is the one place I enjoy going into. My instructors that Iv had have given me so much and I appreciate it . Chef Rodriguez thanks for having patience with our whole cluster your an amazing teacher. I love going to your class. You have so much patience and faith in us thanks again you opened many doors of knowledge and opportunities. You are like our mom :)
I have been given the ability to bake and decorate cakes. Sugar kiss haha given to me by Chicken and Chef R. funny but based on the baking of sweets. :) Cupcake girl given to me by Chef Barney :) I was always making her and decorating cupcakes :) My life revolves around baking and decorating. My passion for food comes from the simple joy of creating and enjoying amazing food. Working with food is totally different from being stuck in a office working the main thing is that nothing can compare to the creation of food. Humans were given the opportunity to eat food but we were blessed with a brain, arms, eyes, and taste. With those given things we can create, out of the world delicacies crazy amazing cakes. A smile on the face of the person that is being served is what fullfills me :). The aromas, noises of the kitchen, timers going off, and the final products is what makes a great kitchen. Patience, creativity, and confidence is what is needed in the culinary industry, having those three you are guranteed success and triumph. A great chef works with what they have, they mess up who has to know fix it up put an amazing presentation and you are guranteed praise from others in your work and smiles on the clients without them knowing that you messed up. If you never make mistakes your not learning. Mistakes or ur deficits is what makes us stronger in knowledge and you will learn and seek achievement.
I will be attending to a culinary school to further my knowledge in baking and pastries. Have a bachelors in baking and pastries and an associates in culinary. I will try to later on go to the Culinary Institute of America after I have had my six months of restaurant experience. Hopefully me and Noehly attend the same school that will make everything better. After my studies I look forward in establishing a bake shop, cake shop, and a restaurant. But my first goal is to make my money and I will be in a food truck making gourmet food or something interesting. We all start from the bottom and climb up the ladder to success. So expect me being in a food truck selling awesome baked goods or food. In a few years I will be achieving success and thanks to my teachers and classmates. Do I look forward from departing from my high school culinary arts of course not but we all have to depart and go there own ways. Hopefully, noo I know so that each and every one of us will be somebody in the culinary industry. :D My passion for baking will never vanish. I love my food!

caro

Hello, I'm Carolina (Caro for short). What drives me to bake? I like baking because it takes time and care to be able to make something amazing. The sweet aroma that fills a room when someone is baking cookies or a cake. More than anything I like being able to decorate.  During the summer I helped my aunt out with a small business she has of baking cakes, it was there where I found a true passion in being able to turn something into a work of art. It is something I get a personal satisfaction from, and I hope on being able to pursue baking in the future as a career.

Ms. Pres (the turtle) ahhhhhhh

Hello, my name is Rosemary Cruz, i am a senior at Skyline Highschool. I am the only girl, out of three brothers. My life is pretty much different types of chapters in a book. I am a social girl, but i don't open up to many people. My life was easy at the beginning, because i got everything i wanted. Now having to make my own decisions, is the hardest thing i'm having to do. My passion in Culinary is, baking. Cooking is something i don't like doing, the sweetest part is the best. I enjoy making cupcakes, i do not like making cakes, well only if needed. Cupcakes are simple and cute, which is me :) Once im done with culinary school, i plan to open a cupcake shop, just like Sprinkles. Until then, let me dream.

Ricardo Rayas

Yeah my name is Ricardo Rayas but in culinary they call me Butch. They call me like this because o kind of look like a butcher. what really drives me is i would like to be rich, take my mom out of the neighborhood. What really drives my passion is the satisfaction that I'm making someone happy.

Noehly M- Senior Sous Chef

Hello my name is Noehly. I love to make great tasting food. I feel that I'm meant to be in the kitchen 24/7. Once I walk in and see all the equipment and people in there my stressed self begins to relax. Sometimes I think I'm in there too much. What can I say? It's basically my second home. I love cooking because, it brings people together and helps us all work as one to create something so simple yet majestic and wonderful. I LOVE CULINARY ARTS!! Plus, I'd like to thank Chef Rodriguez for having SOOOO MUCH patience, opening so many doors, and giving us a brighter future.

DreNae Davison

My name is DreNae Davison. I'm in the 11th grade and I attend Skyline High School. My favorite color is yellow and my favorite food is pizza. I have 1 brother yet, my extended family is REALLY big. We have a weekly tradition after church, were we meet up at my grandmother's house and enjoy a fiest. I guess that's where I was first inspired to become an executive chef.

I have a passion for cooking, because I enjoy seeing people enjoy a good meal. It would be even awesome to see a ton of people at one time enjoy a meal me, myself created. Also including my team that helped me ;)

Samuel Crayton

Um football is what drives me. I joined Culinary Arts to get into Skyline to play football. It was cool for a little bit and it got cool again senior year, because of our new teacher, Chef Rodriquez. That's about all folks

Nesly Ortiz

my name is Nesly Ortiz and i attend to skyline high school. i'm part of the culinary cluster. my passion for cooking began by watching how other people get happy just by tasting their favorite dish. i wish that some day i can make somebody smile too, this is the reason i decided to join this cluster. every passion might be different but what i want to do is make others happy and excited by just tasting delicious food. :)

aARON

Suuup..!!!! Im Aaron Steward (aka) Aaron. Im a junior at Skyline Highschool where I participate in the Culinary Arts cluster. Some of my hobbies and interest are producing music, videogames, sports, science, and eating lots of FOOD! My favorite food/dish is Chicken Scampi. I was born the only child and I currently live with my Grandmother.

The thing drives my passion for cooking is my appetite for good food. I figured, since I love to eat...why not learn how to prepare and create the dishes I crave so much.

Anonymous

Anonymous, not really. My name is Mark Meza, i generate my own passion for cooking. I use Culinary arts to vent my frustrations. Anything and everything can frustrate me, especially ignorance. I hate to work with ignorance. I get extremely tired of how life works out, sometimes i cant use cooking as a stress reliever and I just feel like i want to be ANTI-SOCIAL. I just want people to leave me alone. Some can understand and some cant. I rather be plain and boring than up beat and happy like all the rest of the people who think life is all fun and games. I can understand those who smile through their lies. Ive learned to let go of my past, catch up to my present, and move on to my future, but people tend to take me back and then i have to start all over. So again i am going to be anti-social as best as possible. Have fun...

The story of Nestor

Everybody  my name is Nestor Eduardo Monge Jr. and I'm 16, I have a twin that looks nothing like me but we do have a lot in common. And I am the son of Dalila Davila and Nestor Eduardo Monge Sr. I remember why I was inspired to become a chef like it was yesterday. I was five and i went next door to my grandparents to eat some breakfast. It was a crazy breakfast because my grandfather had made me FIVE separate dishes that he wanted me to try. I took a bite of the first dish that he made me and I had to know his secrets. He took me into the kitchen and showed me the techniques that he used and the skills he portrayed inspired me. After the breakfast he taught me a little of the basics of cooking and told me of his dream, a dream to open up a restaurant. Unfortunately he wasn't able to complete his dream, may he rest in peace, and now I want to carry on his dream to make it come true just for him. I wont stop or give up on my goals, I will continue to fight through my hardships to make his dream come true and make him proud.

German Faz

Hello there, my name is German Faz. I'm a seventeen year that is no way related to Germany (at least from I'm aware of.) Most people who don't know me see me as a quiet guy who doesn't socialize much. Whether that is true or not I leave for others to decide. My major interests apart from food would be gaming, tech, biology, medicine, music of any type and I have gotten the urge too study ballistics sometimes.

The main things that drive my passion for culinary arts would be the fast pace the career asks of. I don't want a desk job as a career, I prefer hands on activities with movement and variety. Something that isn't just paperwork and phone calls. I also love the variety, creativity, and overall sense of accomplishment you can get from this career. Anything from completing a dish, creating your own twist to a recipe, to seeing people reaction of your food motivate me. Even if I somehow decide that this isn't going to be my career choice, the experience and the skills learned will always be something I'll use and appreciate.

Alberto "Chicken Little" Preza

A lot of people don't know my name too well but its Alberto. I really just got into culinary arts because it's one of the only things in my life that keep me sane. I started cooking in elementry for my family, but one thing I do it for is to please people. I love to make people happy and cooking is one of the only things i know how to do. I can honestly say that my passion comes from my mother just seeing her when she used to eat after a long day is just priceless. I maintain a passion for the application of befuddling nomenclature in a headstrong attempt to addle the individuals I convene with. trans.(I like to talk so I completely lose the person I'm talking to) {Ruth is lost as I typed the last sentence} I call myself a virtuoso because I play so many instruments and although I am unable to prove in a classical application I can play 7 wind instruments very well. I am mostly a jazz musician but I joined every band we had just so I can play year-round.

My passion for the culinary arts lies in my life's desire to please any and everyone I meet, especially the girls I meet and make a special attempt to please ;) I love to cook and always will, that is as long as;people still love to eat, girls still love desserts, and if I can still play my surplus of fun instruments.

Medina, Jorge

I am Jorge Medina, but I prefer to be called by my last name. I am somewhat a fan of sleeping, yet I love moving around a lot. I love the beautiful sport of football (soccer for those who aren't used to calling football, even though that's what my sport really is). I play guitar and despise reading, and play Xbox 360, I love gaming, because it gives me a rush when i do amazing in it, and gaming is not for children, games are an art. I love baking and cooking Italian meals, I don's really know why, I just do. My future plans are to graduate and go to the Marines.

What drives my passion for cooking is how my family reacts to my food, even though I don't do it that often it still good to know they like what I do. Also I seek perfection when I cook, I just wish I had the money to buy all the ingredients I want to practice.

Oscar Gonzalez

I'm the son of Manuel and Silvia Gonzalez and the Brother of Elsa and Analuisa Gonzalez. I went to Harrell Budd and J.E.J.C.S. for elementary, D.E.S.A., and now Skyline. I played sports in elementary (soccer, baseball, and basketball.) I was also part of NJHS and in NHS. Volunteered as a cook at the Cowboy's Stadium for L.U.L.A.C. After school I hope to go to a business college to set up my own restaurants (bakeries, low and high class) and make at LEAST one video game. Afterwards, go to the Marines and see what goes on from there.

What drives my passion for cooking is having to cook for a group of people because I like to see them talking and having a great time around the table; and i honestly believe that cooking a meal will bring people closer together.
